Party FAQ's

Where do we do the party?

Mad Science comes to you, either your home or a room you have arranged at another location such as a park district, YMCA or JCC. Some of our parties do need a room that can get darkened to get the most out of the experiments. Darkness helps for COOL experiments with electrical sparks and things that glow in the dark!   Please keep in mind that the party must be indoors as some experiments just do not work well outside. If you choose to rent a room at a restaurant, it must be a private room with a door that closes.

What do I need at my party location to set up for the party?

All we need from you is one table, preferably bigger than a card table, to set up our equipment on. We want the children sitting on the floor. That way they can all be close to the front and can see everything that happens. The room should have access to electricity, an outlet, and preferably the ability to get dark.

Is this a messy party?

NO! Our experiments are planned and packed to be mess free. Mad Science party instructors always have a large tarp with them if you are concerned about an accidental spill (children sometimes drop things). We will leave your party location exactly as we found it.

Who would enjoy a Mad Science party?

Girls and boys ages 4 –12! We have lots of different sets of experiments easily adapted to various age groups. We even have a special set of experiments designed specifically for the short attention spans of 4-5 year old children.

How long should my party be?

We recommend 2 hours. This allows 30 minutes for the children to get there and get settled and eat, 60 minutes of Mad Science, and 30 minutes for cake and treats.

     Example time schedule

    2:00 PM –Invitation time

2:30- 3:30 PM –Mad Science (without an upgrade)

3:30 – 4:00 PM –Cake and ice cream

    4:00 PM –Go home

My child has been to a friend's Mad Science party.  Can you do different experiments?

We have kept a record of every party we have done for the past 10 years. We will do our best to schedule a set of experiments that your child has not yet seen. Please also know that most of the experiments in our parties are different from those done in our classes and camp programs.

What kind of experiments will you do at our party?

Our experiments are designed to convey basic scientific principles in fun and exciting ways.  We may cover anything from air pressure to electricity to the states of matter using visually appealing, dynamic (and of course completely safe) experiments.

Can I pick the experiments you will do?

No. Mad Science does as many as 15 parties each weekend. Coordinating the equipment and instructors so all the children are seeing experiments that are new and age appropriate is often quite a chore. We will let you know at your confirmation call the week of your party exactly what experiments have been assigned to your party. If you add the upgrade package to your party, then the specific upgrade will be your choice. (Click on parties to see the upgrade choices). All the parties are fun and interactive and include a take home experiment for every child.

When should I book my party?

We usually start filling our schedule four to six weeks in advance. This will give you the best choice of dates and times. However, sometimes we can accommodate a last minute request. Give us a call. Please know that we cannot schedule a party via e-mail. You must call the office so we can talk to you. We promise to return messages left promptly!

How many children may I have at my party?

Our experience shows that Mad Science parties work best with groups of fewer than 30 children.   Preschool parties, ages 4-5 are limited to 20 children. Why these limits? Our parties are very interactive. All the children want to have a chance to participate and answer questions. The larger the group, the less turns they get to talk. Larger parties are just not as fun!

The preschool party is set up for a maximum of 20 children so all the children get equipment to do the experiments. (They do not share too well at this age)

What about siblings and younger cousins or friends?

If there are children that are much younger than the majority of children at the party, please know that the younger children may have trouble following the discussions and explanations. They are more than welcome at the party but please note that any children under age 3 should be sitting with an adult for safety reasons. Any children participating in the party, doing the experiments and making the take home project will be counted in the total number of children.
