After-School Instructors Needed

We are currently looking for high-energy instructors who love working with groups of elementary age children.  This is a really fun job if you enjoy working with children.

Job Requirements:

  • Must have a dependable car.
  • Must have previous experience working with groups of elementary age children. This can be things like camp counselor, Sunday school teacher,  or children's coach.  We're sorry but just babysitting is not enough experience.  It must be experience with groups of at least 10 children.
  • Must have availability from approximately 2:00pm - 5:00pm at least 2 days per week, Monday through Thursday.
  • Do not need to have a science background. We do the training.
  • We do a criminal background check on all employees.
  • MUST LOVE WORKING WITH GROUPS OF CHILDREN!

Pay:

  • $25 per 1-hour class for the first semester that you teach for us.
  • $30 per 1-hour class for the second semester that you teach for us.
  • $35 per 1-hour class for 3 or more semesters that you teach for us.
  • $7 per hour for training.
  • $8 for equipment pickup and weekly meeting.

How The Job Works:

  • We offer our after-school programs in over 60 Austin area schools.
  • Parents voluntarily sign up their children in a Mad Science class that meets one time per week for either 6 or 8 weeks(depending on the school).
  • The classes last one hour and start immediately when the school day ends(usually 2:45pm - 3:00pm, depending on the school).
  • Mad Science instructors are required to be on campus at least 15 minutes prior to the start of class.
  • It takes about 15 minutes to clean up after class.
  • After class, the instructor takes the children out front to be picked up by their parents. Although it is very rare, instructors HAVE to wait with the child of a late parent.  We NEVER leave a child unattended.  That's why we require availability until 5:00pm even though you usually can leave within 15 minutes of when class is over.
  • We provide all the training, equipment and supplies.
  • On Fridays at 3:00pm, we have a short instructor meeting at our office in Southwest Austin. At that time, we go over any questions or issues that may have come up during the week. You will also pick up the equipment that you will use the following week. This meeting and pickup is usually less than 1/2 hour.
  • Unless you have previously taught the particular class, you will be required to go over and review it prior to the first class that you teach that week.
  • Example:  If you are available to teach 4 days per week, you would teach the same class to 4 groups of children for that week and then meet at the office on Friday to pick up next week's equipment.  You might be at School A on Monday, School B on Tuesday, School C on Wednesday, and School D on Thursday.  However, you would use the same equipment at each of those schools.
  • The next week, you will teach the same group of students at each of the above schools, but with a different class.
  • We need a firm commitment from all of our instructors to teach a complete semester and finish the set of 6 or 8 week classes because we want the children to get to know their Mad Scientist and you to know the children.  If you can not make this commitment, please do not apply.
