Kamp FAQ's

What is a Mad Science Kamp?

Mad Science Kamps are Kool Activities with Mad Science Personnel.  We are not a day camp in the traditional sense.   We do not offer swimming, hiking, horseback riding, meals, etc. We offer a structured three hour science program daily for one week.  You can combine two programs and we can keep your child occupied for the entire week.   Mad Science kamps are designed for exciting fun hands-on science activities where children learn by doing.   Your child will become a junior scientist for the week, having the opportunity to experience a variety of science adventures.   We use an inquiry-based technique that allows even the youngest kamper to enjoy learning.   Children will design, create, build and assemble a variety of interesting projects and will take at least one project home every day.   We will provide all the materials your child will need.   Children should dress comfortably and be ready to have some fun!

What is the child to instructor ratio?

There will be no more than a maximum of 25 children in each kamp.   Actually, the historical averages are 15-16 students per Kamp. Each camp will have 2 instructors.

Recommended Age?

For most of our Kamps the recommended age is 7 or older and enrollment is open to all, but we do have limited Kamp for pre-K, ages 4 - 6.  We will not consider anyone younger than 6 1/2.  for most of our Kamps.  F.Y.I.  Girls love Mad Science too!   This is not just a boy thing  Robotics Kamps are recommended for 8 and older.  For advance robotics it is recommended that the child has taken Radical Robots or Jungle Robitocs first and that he/she be 9 years old or older.

Are different aged children in the same kamp?

Yes.   We use a buddy system whereby the older children will sometimes help the younger ones. Also, with two instructors in every kamp, there is always plenty of help.   For most of the activities, the children work in small groups.

Who are the Mad Science kamp instructors?

Most of our instructors are people who have worked for us in our after-school programs that we conduct in over 60 schools every winter, spring and fall semester.   All of them have experience working with children and their main characteristics is their love of working with children.

How long has Mad Science been doing kamps?

This is the sixth year that we will be running our weeklong summer kamps in Bergen County.   Mad Science of Bergen County is a franchise of The Mad Science Group in Montreal Canada.   There are over 130 Mad Science franchises all over the world.   The Mad Science Group has been providing Mad Science programs for over 16 years.   Collectively we reach over 5,000,000 children and parents over the world annually.

How do I register my child for a kamp?

If you are paying by credit card, you can register your child right online.  You can also fax or call us and we will be happy to take your registration over the phone.   If you are paying by check or money order, you can download a registration form and send it in with your payment.   Due to limited spaces in each kamp, we cannot reserve a space for your child until we receive your payment.  If you are paying by check, we do not reserve a space until we receive your check.

Is payment due in full when I register?

Yes.   We will not deposit your check or charge your credit card until there is sufficient enrollment for us to hold the kamp.   (We usually require a minimum of 15 children per kamp.)   If you register your child for more than one kamp, your payment will be deposited when at least one of the kamps get sufficient enrollment.

How soon do I need to register to reserve a space for my child?

Register as soon as possible! Some kamps and dates fill very quickly, while some may have spaces available up to the start date.   We recommend, however, that you register early and secure your spot.   Again, we won't deposit your payment until the kamp gets sufficient enrollment.   If you wait and register less than 21 calendar days prior to the start date, you must add 15% to the fee.   Please realize its very difficult to schedule and administer last minute because of tardiness in enrollment.   We generally cancel a kamp because of insufficient enrollment 2 weeks prior to the start date.

Can I sign my child up for more than 1 kamp?

Yes.   Many children sign up for multiple kamps.   Each one is totally different so that your child can enjoy them all without repeating activities.
We can keep him or her engaged the whole week.  Just pack a lunch.

My child has attended a Mad Science kamp before. If he/she took a particular kamp, will it be the same kamp that he/she has taken before?

The kamps have generally remained the same as the ones that we have done in the past. However, each year we make some changes so there will be a few different things.   We have had a lot of children take a particular kamp again and still enjoy it the second time.   In addition, this year all of our kamps are half day kamps and we have added an advanced robotics kamp for our repeat and older kampers.

Are these the only locations where you are holding your kamps this summer?

Not necessarily.   We may be adding locations, especially in the outlying areas.   In addition, if you can get at least 15 children and can provide a location, we will bring a kamp to you.   Usually, we can customize something to fit the times and dates that you want.   Call us - We would like to visit with you about this.

Do you provide a lunch with the 3-hour kamp?

No.   Since the kamp is only three hours long, we don't have a lunch time.   We do, however, have a snack break.   We ask you to send a snack with your child.   If your child is taking a morning kamp and an afternoon kamp, then please pack a sack lunch, in addition to the snacks.   The children will have lunch time between the two kamps  --  and yes, they are supervised.
