Workshops

Mad Science of Southern Alberta can enhance your science program with inquiry-based workshops that meet provincial curriculum requirements! Structured as an in-class field trip, a Mad Science workshop is a convenient way to offer students a hands-on science experience without leaving the school. With professional lesson plans, unique equipment and animated instructors, Mad Science workshops offer preschool to sixth grade children truly engaging learning experiences. Dozens of workshop topics are available.  (Please note that preschool workshops are located under Preschool Programs under Education on the home page).

All of our workshops for grades one - six are one hour long and are for a group of up to 30 children.  They range in price from $150 - $160 plus gst.  We do extend discounts to multiple bookings of the same workshop made on the same day.

LIFE SCIENCES:

*Mmmm....TASTE:  Put on your lab coat and stick out your tongue as your students discover the delicious biology behind their taste buds.

*SEEKING OUR SENSES:  Exlpore all five senses using optical illusions, sounds, and even trying your hand at reading Braille.

EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCES:

*DINOSAURS:  Examine real fossil casts and learn the differences between the teeth of herbivores and carnivores.  Be an archeologist with a mini excavation and cast your own dino tooth.

*WHERES THE AIR:  This dynamic class explains the concepts of air pressure and bouyancy.

*MINERAL MANIA:  Recreate the process of rock formation and devise ways to identify and classify rocks and minerals.

*Black & Blue Oceans:  Devise and test oil spill techniques in a mock oil spill.  Explore the causes and remedies for acid rain.

*Science of Flight:  The Wright brothers would be proud as we learn the fundamentals about flight, drag, gravity, lift and thrust.

*Walloping Weather:  Become a weather forecaster for the day and learn what causes rain and lightening, how to predict the weather and how it is measured.

PHYSICAL SCIENCES

*SLIPPERY SCIENCE:  This class demystifies one of the most fascinating and beneficial molecules known to mankind.... Polymers.

*MAGNIFICENT MAGNETS:  Discover the invisible fields surrounding magnets using Mad Science iron fillings.

*MATTER OF FACT:  Explore molecules and how they are held together.  See the dramatic differences between chemical and physical reactions as you mix up a batch of your very own Mad Science putty to take home.

*DRY ICE:  It looks hot but it's really cold!  Explore the three states of matter.  Turn water into ice in just thirty seconds!  Find out if ice can burn.  How cold is it anyway???

*ACIDS AND BASES:  Uncover the secrets of chemisty and the effects that acids and bases have on our daily lives.  Learn to test for acid rain, make your own CO2 fire extinguisher and more....

*PLAYING WITH POLYMERS:  Dissolve styrofoam with a mystery chemical and make your very own slime to experiment with.

*GOOD VIBRATIONS:  Investigate the science of sound.  You will be amazed as you hear church bells through your fingers.

*ELECTRICITY:  Excite some electrons as you construct some serious circuits and test the conductivity of different materials.

*MISCHIEVOUS MAGNETS:  What makes metal magnetic?  What shapes do magnetic fields make?  How do compasses work?  Hire Mad Science to come into your class to find out!

*UNDER PRESSURE:  Join Bernoulli and Newton as we take this exciting look at the science behind aerodynamics and the properties of air...under pressure.  Use a vortex generator to create air pockets with a punch, and levitate ping-pong balls in defiance of gravity!

*KITCHEN CHEMISTRY:  Explore everday chemistry in the kitchen by investigating chemical properties and reactions that occur between fats, sugars and starches.

*MAD MACHINES:  Learn how simple machines make our lives easier by exploring levers, wheels & axels and pulleys.
