We are open to any anyone seeking very flexible, decent paying, and enjoyable part-time work. Summer hours may be full-time if interested, or part-time.  We deliver fun science programming to children ranging from 3 to 12 years old in a thirteen county central Iowa area, including greater Des Moines.

Much of our programming is done in the hours right after school, on weekends, and during the summer.  Events also take place in the evenings and during the school day.  Starting pay for non-summer camp events is typically $20 per event hour, plus mileage.  Starting pay for summer camps is approximately $400 per week for six camp hours per day, plus mileage.  There are also many non-camp events during the summer.  You decide whether you want to accept any or all events offered to you as a Mad Science employee.  Office hours are also available.  The application process is open to all adults, including retirees, and older teens.

If you think you might make a good Mad Scientist, check to see if you fit ALL of the following:

  • You are very comfortable around children and they enjoy being around you.  They know you are there as an advocate for them.
  • You are capable of keeping large groups of children under control, while letting them have fun ... a very challenging task!
  • You are willing to let the animated, energetic and fun-side of your personality come forth with frequency, while delivering the programming.  A bit of "eccentricity" does not hurt at all!
  • You enjoy mixing entertainment and education when presenting.
  • You are respectful and empathetic of children, while exuding personal confidence in a manner that returns respect from children.
  • You enjoy science.  You need not necessarily have taught before - We can mentor you.  You need to be able to communicate basic science principles well, and such that the children can see you enjoy it.
  • You are willing to teach science safety to the children.

We provide all training materials, equipment and supplies.  Your training time is paid.  Prospective employees will undergo a background check quite similar to teachers in most central Iowa school districts.
