Welcome to Mad Science 2012 Summer Camp!
Here are some of the topics that are available for Mad Science Summer Camp in 2012!!
Chemicals, Cells and Crime
Welcome to Cell City. Campers will learn that most cells are so small that they cannot be seen with just their eyes – they will have to use a microscope. They will learn about chemical reactions and that chemistry is “cool”. They will learn that matter is never created or destroyed. On another day, they will learn about the organs in their body and how they function. The week will conclude at the “scene of the crime” when the campers will experience first-hand how a crime is investigated and solved.
Crazy Chemistry
Become a Mad Science Chemist! Discover how chemical reactions are everywhere. Figure out if a chemical change has occurred right before your eyes and explore the properties of polymers. Mix, mush and brew together different chemicals to create things. Campers will be introduced to how inventors work and why many inventions are created by accident.
Dinosaurs!!
Learn the names of all the different dinosaurs, where they lived, what they ate and how big they really were? Campers will go on a dig, discover fossils, make a dinosaur tooth and really learn what it was like to live during the dinosaur age. By the end of this week long camp everyone will be a young paleontologist!
Earth Camp
Earth Camp gives campers a better understanding of how environmental issues affect our world. Campers will learn the vital role of the food chain. They will explore the effects of, and difficulties in cleaning up oil spills through a hands-on approach. The structure of atoms and molecules will be examined and the difference between chemical and physical changes. Campers will learn the properties of polymers. They will also explore the world of eco-systems and gain an understanding of the major climate factors and patterns associated with weather. On another day, campers will be introduced to geology, including an understanding of geological formations and physical properties of rocks and minerals. The week will conclude with learning the dangers of using tobacco products.
Earth, Space and Beyond!
Discover how to send secret messages to your friends using special codes! Understand the basics of water pollution, acid rain, and the benefits of solar energy. Experiment with games and activities while learning how physical and chemical sciences affect their equipment, movement, and technique. Learn about life cycles and animal habits, and even replicate an animal's footprints. And find out why the sun, the moon, the stars, and gravity are only a few of the exciting things that must be dealt with on this Mad Science space mission.
More Power To You!
Join us for a fun-filled week of science experiments ad cool projects. Topics include Magic, Kitchen Chemistry, Super Structures, Wacky Water, Flying Machines, The Science of Toys, and much more!!! Learn about optics and lasers, Earth’s amazing wonders, and discover many magical secrets. Children will experience a variety of scientific fields and make many take home projects.
NASA: Journey into Outer Space
In partnership with NASA - From our earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on program will send campers on a quest for exploration of outer space! Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight, the challenges of space travel, and participate in a rocket launch! Each camper’s mission is to go where bright young minds love to go! (Space suits not required.)
Science Discovery
Experiment! Explore! Design! Create! Your week will be packed full of interactive group activities that will have you looking at science in a completely different way. Check out shapes and why they are so strong. Investigate arches and geodesic domes. Find out how wedges, screws and levers help us in our daily lives. Become a Mad Chemist as you learn about the chemistry of things you encounter every day. Where do owls live and what do they eat? How do some bugs walk on water? How do ants collect their food? These questions and more will be answered.
Secret Agent Lab
Join the Crime Scene and be a part of solving the strangest crimes in town.
Campers team up with the Mad Science Crime Scene Lab and experience what it takes to be a true science detective. Explore forensics….Forensics used science to explain how a crime happened. Campers will use some of the same experiments that a forensic scientist would use. Discover the role of DNA and learn the basics of the code of life. Learn about the system of the body – circulatory, respiratory, skeletal and muscular. Each day you will explore the fundamental nuts and bolts of chemistry and become the best science detective. Campers will also work as spies and secret agents which, we know, can be extremely dangerous. When you are part of this camp you will always be looking over your shoulder to make sure you are not being followed. Campers will use scientific tools and techniques to complete missions without being detected.
Space - The Final Frontier
From the earliest flying machines to the first rocket flights, this week long exciting hands-on program will teach campers to build many different flying devices, see how Newton’s Laws of motion help explain how things move and how rockets fly and show them how amazing our Milky Way is. Experience the laws of motion and gravity, and see how they work in space, in the air – and on the ground!
