Each camper that attends a Mad Science Camp at the State Museum will receive a FREE Museum Pass to be used by anyone at anytime. In addition, each camper will get a unique experience by having guided tours of the various exhibits.
Our Specialty Winter Break programs are themed for the Holidays and cool days of winter. Camps are available as either a half-day (AM - 9am - 12:00pm OR PM - 1:00-4pm) or a full-day (9am - 4pm). See below for winter break program schedule only at the South Carolina State Museum. Don't forget that we also have before and after care available from 8:30 - 5:30pm!

Yes, Mad Science, the world's leading provider of fun science programs is now offering winter science camps ONLY at the South Carolina State Museum! Now kids can enjoy Holiday Themed science camps, sparking their imaginative learning while school is out! Your child will become a junior scientist for the day, having the opportunity to experience a variety of unique activities.
Our camps are truly unique experiences and encompass all of the fun and excitement you have come to expect from Mad Science, including our phenomenal take-homes! Children will design, create, build and assemble a variety of interesting projects and will take at least one project home every day.
What is the goal of Mad Science Camp?
The goal of Mad Science Camp is for kids TO HAVE FUN doing hands-on science activities. Mad Science Camps are NOT SCHOOL, however, children will be exposed to a variety of scientific concepts in a safe and fun environment at the museum.
My child has already taken Mad Science at their school or rec. center... Is Winter Camp different?
YES! Mad Science Winter Camps provide Holiday themed programming that is different than our After School and Rec. Center classes. They are unique experiences, specially designed for a Half Day or Full Day of Hands-On Fun!
How do I register my child for a camp?
All 2011 Mad Science Winter Camp registration will take place online. CLICK HERE! Due to limited spaces in each camp, we cannot reserve a space for your child until we receive your payment. If you require further assistance with registering your child for Mad Science camp, please call our Mad Science Lab at 803-739-2122.
Do you offer before and after care?
Yes! Before and After Care is NOW AVAILABLE with all Winter Camps. Campers can be droped off any time after 8:30 AM and can be picked up between 5:00 and 5:30 PM
What ages are the camps designed for?
2011 Winter Camps are designed for children enrolled in grades PreK through 5th grade. Camps will be taught at the age-appropriate level and may be split into grade levels pending enough participation.
Who are the Mad Science camp instructors?
Our amazing Mad Science instructors are fully-trained and have extensive experience working within the Mad Science system. All instructors have passed an extensive background check and have a background in working with children.
What is the child to instructor ratio?
We maintain a child/teacher ratio of 15:1. There will be no more than 24 children in each camp.
What should I bring to camp?
Please send your child to camp in comfortable clothes. Half day programs you will need to bring a snack. Full day programs you will need 2 snacks and a bag lunch (no peanut products, please). If your child has any food allergies, please make sure to note that on your registration.
Can I sign my child up for more than one camp?
YES! Many children sign up for multiple camps. Each one is totally different so that your child can enjoy them all without repeating activities.
Are there any additional materials fees?
NO! All materials, supplies and take-home experiments are included in the camp cost.
What if my child misses a day of camp?
If your child misses a day of camp, we are happy to provide you with all materials for take-home activities that your child has missed. We are not able to offer any reimbursement for missed camp days.
Is there a cancellation policy?
Yes. If registration is cancelled more than one week prior to the start date of camp, a $20 per camper fee will be charged. If registration is cancelled one week or less prior to start date of camp, a $30 per camper fee will apply.
