Space…the Final Frontier

Students will use simple materials to quickly learn their way around the skies. A scale model of the planets will demonstrate the different relative sizes of the planets in our galaxy. A comet will be created before their very eyes. They will get the opportunity to see what happens when meteorites strike the earth or other planets. A demonstration will uncover how stars can actually produce the raw material that is the basis of all life on earth. Finally, they will build and take home a Mad Science Shuttle.

1.1

Body Basics

Students will explore the major systems of the body using a variety of models. After pulling apart a model of the brain, children will test their brain power through a memory game. A Digesto-Rama will help clear the path for food and stethoscopes will assist the children in learning about the heart. Students will also test shapes to see why our bones are able to protect the insides of our body. Children will conclude the class making a flip book that will allow them to share what they have learned with others.

1.2

Seeking Our Senses

Students are introduced to how our five senses work and function, learning the basic biology of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.  The sense of sight is tested by allowing children to make observations when an apple “candle” is burned. Optical illusions also demonstrate how the eyes can be fooled. Students will learn about relative temperature and experiment with sound through the use of a tuning fork. By imitating bats, students will learn how ear size affects hearing.

1.2

Dinosaurs

Children will investigate dinosaurs’ diets by looking at the fossils of both carnivores and herbivores and create plaster tooth print casts. Students will also dig in Dino Buckets to discover other dinosaur fossils, learning about both the life cycle of dinosaurs and what happened when they died to create fossils. Through a hands-on activity, children will learn about the size of dinosaurs. To cap it all off, they will recover the tooth casts that they made.
