Dry Ice

Students will be introduced to the concept of matter, and the properties and the characteristics of its three most common manifestations: solids, liquids and gases. Using water as an example, they will learn how, why and in which progression matter usually transforms from one state to another. Students will then learn of a lesser known phenomenon called “sublimation,” whereby a solid turns directly into a gas without ever becoming a liquid. Then, they will see it in action with dry ice!

2.1

Matter of Fact

Students will examine both atoms and molecules, and will build their very own marshmallow molecules. Through a hands-on approach, students will learn and observe the difference between physical and chemical changes, play alchemists by actually turning paper-clips to gold (well, almost), and to cap it all off, students will find out just how much fun polymers can be!

2.1

Slippery Science

Children will discover the world of polymers, examining everyday objects to discover the properties of a polymer. They will explore a mystery polymer that has some unique properties and even see a polymer that defies gravity. All students will end the class by making their own polymer: Mad Science Slime.

2.1

Body Basics

Students will explore the major systems of the body using a variety of models. After pulling apart a model of the brain, children will test their brain power through a memory game. A Digesto-Rama will help clear the path for food and stethoscopes will assist the children in learning about the heart. Students will also test shapes to see why our bones are able to protect the insides of our body. Children will conclude the class making a flip book that will allow them to share what they have learned with others.
