Harnessing Heat

The class will learn and observe the basic properties of heat by playing the role of the atoms, as well as observing the effects and behavior of warm air and water. The children will witness a tea bag rocket-launch, a gravity defying candle lighting. Finally, students will experience a taste bud pleasing demonstration of heat at work, transforming solid sugar into the spun floss of cotton candy.

K.1

Matter of Fact

Students will examine both atoms and molecules, and will build their very own marshmallow molecules. Through a hands-on approach, students will learn and observe the difference between physical and chemical changes, play alchemists by actually turning paper-clips to gold (well, almost), and to cap it all off, students will find out just how much fun polymers can be!

K.1

Slippery Science

Children will discover the world of polymers, examining everyday objects to discover the properties of a polymer. They will explore a mystery polymer that has some unique properties and even see a polymer that defies gravity. All students will end the class by making their own polymer: Mad Science Slime.

K.1

Dinosaurs

Children will investigate dinosaurs’ diets by looking at the fossils of both carnivores and herbivores and create plaster tooth print casts. Students will also dig in Dino Buckets to discover other dinosaur fossils, learning about both the life cycle of dinosaurs and what happened when they died to create fossils. Through a hands-on activity, children will learn about the size of dinosaurs. To cap it all off, they will recover the tooth casts that they made.

K.2

Life in the Sea

Students will have the opportunity to discover ocean habitats by experimenting with seawater and its unique properties. They will identify creatures that inhabit the oceans and some of the characteristics that make them able to line a watery life. Finally, students will make their own Cartesian divers to continue their underwater exploration.

K.2

Mad Science Machines

This workshop will give students a chance to discover that simple machines can make our life much easier. Volunteers will get to build a giant lever and see how it works. Pulley systems will show how pulleys allow us to lift objects with less effort. Finally, students will apply their newfound mechanical knowledge by building their very own machine.
