MCPS 4th Grade

Chemistry-

In Dry Ice Capades students learn about states of matter. In addition to learning the basics about melting and freezing, we’ll demonstrate how some substances can sublimate, or go from being a solid to a gas without ever being a liquid. Even metal can melt before your eyes! You can choose from one of two take home activities. Melt sugar to make your very own cotton candy cone, or make a bubbling potion in a cool thermocromic (color change) cup!

Life Science-

In Ecosystem Explorations we discuss the importance of  producers, consumers, and decomposers in the food chain! Learn about how the “circle of life” is important to animal survival (humans included)! See how pollution comes from sources we never think of with our “Mad Lake”. We see how these toxins can affect the tenuous balance of an ecosystem and attempt to clean it up from a model beach environment. Finally, we find out what carrying capacity is through a fun and interactive mouse hunt.

Earth Science-

Learn more about how the Earth Works!! Working together children learn about plate tectonics by “dissecting” the earth and discovering the three layers. We discuss what happens along these plates by discussing the “ring of fire”, making volcanoes erupt, and breaking geodes. Everyone sees how metamorphic rocks are formed by watching crystals grow. Learn how impurities can have an illuminating effect on different types of rocks!   Finally we use these impurities to create a fun keychain to take home.
