Mad Science™ is seeking high energy presenters for our fun after-school science programs in both public and private elementary schools. This position requires a dynamic person who access to a reliable car and a schedule that allows you to be able to work a minimum of 3 afternoons (starting at 2p) a week. Prior experience with kids, paid or volunteer, is an absolute must! We want you to have fun, to educate and to make a difference!

ABOUT THE JOB - The Mad Science™ Instructor/Presenter position is very part-time, about 10 hours per week. Perfect for college students (age 18 and older) or others who need an afternoon job with a flexible schedule.
 

As a Mad Science™ Instructor you will be responsible for facilitating a one-hour after-school science program with a pre-set curriculum. Each session is a very high-energy.  Every one has an entertainment component and an education component and are all hands-on. Each class max's out at 20 children, are typically anywhere from 4 - 8 weeks and meets one-hour per week. All of our classes are held at the schools which are all over the greater Houston area.

As a new instructor you will be assigned to 2-3 classes per week. If you have a lot of working with kid and/or are incredibly gifted in science AND classroom management, you may be assigned to more. Each class will take approximately 2 hours to complete as you are required to be on-site ½ hour before your class begins and it takes about ½ hour to make sure that the kids are delivered safely to parents; you then need to return to the classroom to clean up.

Daytime classes do occur and after at least one semester you may qualify to teach them.

COMPENSATION - All jobs are paid by the job. Mad Science™ pays a starting flat-fee of $25/one-hour class. With set up and tear down it averages about $12.50 per hour. Beginning pay for a Birthday Party/Special Event instructor begins at $30/hour.  Pay raises can occur after each semester and is primarily based on performance and on-time percentage.  Mileage reimbursement is available for travel to certain areas of town.

ABOUT TRAVEL - You must be willing to travel daily to your assigned location. If you do not like to drive or be in your car this many not be the job for you.

ABOUT TRAINING - To be a Mad Science™ instructor you must be thoroughly trained for the classes you will teach. This process can be taken care of as quickly or slowly as you want; it is ultimately up to you and your schedule.  The quicker you get trained the faster we can send you out to more jobs! We pay for training after a 90 day probation period.   

REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB - To be invited to interview you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Previous experience with grade school kids in a formalized (paid or volunteer) setting. Having children of your own does not qualify.
  2. Up-beat, child-friendly personality.
  3. Able to work a minimum of 3 afternoons per week (classes begin anywhere from 2pm to 6pm).
  4. Have a reliable car or access to a reliable car.
  5. Have a valid driver’s license and current proof of automobile insurance.
  6. 18+ years of age.
  7. Able to pass a background and/or fingerprint check.
  8. Looking for part-time work.
  9. Able to attend one mandatory staff meeting per week (Friday 6pm or Monday at noon).
  10. Able to attend a mandatory training week and one orientation session.
