Homeschool FAQs

What is a Mad Science Homeschool Program?

The Mad Science Homeschool Program is a year-long series of science labs offered exclusively to homeschoolers in the OKC metro area*. We meet twice a month on the same day of the week in Edmond, Norman and Oklahoma City.  Our labs are one hour of exciting learning and discovery on a particular topic.  With inquiry-based learning and hands-on activities, your children will work both individually and in small groups.  They will participate in class demonstrations, discuss science principles and concepts, learn new science terminologies, and apply the scientific methodology as these activities are carried out. Through Mad Science, your child will be able to touch, see, hear, smell and taste what science is really all about.

*Our preK to 1st grade classes are open to all children.

My child has taken or seen Mad Science before. Is this class the same stuff?

Mad Science has a line-up of exciting and interesting science topics for the home educated child. We have put together the following year long programs for the homeschool community:

  1. A Kaleidoscope of Science –8 labs of various topics + 8 labs of NASA Academy of Future Space Exporers
  2. 360 degree Science Panorama—8 labs of various topics + 8 labs of Chemistry

Each year we develop new programs for the following year.  While we often offer the same course in consecutive years, we always have something new and exciting for your children!  On occasion a child may take the same course twice. We find that children usually learn something different from the repetition and still enjoy themselves.

What will my child be doing in each class?

Every Mad Science class emphasizes hands-on learning. Your child will be actually be doing a lot of the activities.  Each lab session features a different take-home activity or project that your child makes in class, emphasizing the principles of the day far beyond the classroom time.

Who are your instructors?

Many of our instructors have their college or graduate degrees in education or the sciences.  We also hire college students working towards their degrees.  Mad Science strives to maintain the same instructor throughout the length of your child's program to foster a rapport between instructor and student and facilitate the learning process. On occasion however, situations arise that necessitate the need for a substitute instructor. All our instructors participate in training for classroom management, safe environment, and are required to have a background check with OSBI.

How big are the homeschool classes?

Based on our 2 years of offering this program, the class size ranges from 10 to 17.

How much does the year long program cost and when is payment required?

The program cost is $220 per child.  We offer a $20 discount for those who registered and paid at least the initial amount of $50 on or before July 31st  2009.  We accept cash, check or Visa/MC.

An easy payment plan is outlined as follows:

  • $50.00 due by July 31, 2009
  • $50.00 due by October 1, 2009
  • $50.00 due by December 1, 2009
  • $50 or $70.00 (for undiscounted or regular registration) due by February 1, 2010.

What are the expectations of the child for this class?

Mad Science strives to provide an atmosphere that is both safe and fun.  Our focus is  that we keep our learning environment engaging for all children participating in our lab. To fulfill this commitment, we require all children adhere to basic behavioral guidelines. Our instructors set clear boundaries and expectations as to appropriate conduct and we hold all students to these expectations.  Any discipline issues will be brought to the parents’ attention immediately.  Should an issue persist, we will take necessary steps up to and including removing a child from the class.  Refunds for missed classes are not available for a child removed for disciplinary reasons.

What are the expectations of the parent for this class?

To assist you as you support your child’s learning process at home, we send out a pre and post activity guide.  Additionally, parents are encouraged to observe or participate in any class, space permitting.

What if my child misses a session?

If you know in advance that your child will not be able to attend on a certain date, please let us know prior to the class. We may be able to accommodate your child in another location. We are unable, however, to offer refunds for missed sessions.

What is your inclement weather/class cancellation policy?

Mad Science will follow the inclement weather and school closure policy of the school district  in which we are instructing. In the case of inclement weather, we will  contact you to determine a make up day if your Mad Science class does not run.

What is your refund policy?

At Mad Science we strive to keep our pricing as affordable as possible.  We plan our year and order equipment and supplies ahead so that we may keep our costs and pricing low.  We are, therefore, as a general rule unable to offer refunds for classes that are missed or unused.

To ensure a smooth understanding of the Mad Science Homeschool Program, we ask all parents to sign a release on the first day of class.
