In Class Workshops

 Turn Your Classroom into a

Mad Science Laboratory

Mad Science can enhance your science program with inquiry-based workshops that meet provincial curriculum requirements! Structured as an in-class field trip, a Mad Science workshop is a convenient way to offer students a hands-on science experience without leaving the school. With professional lesson plans, unique equipment and animated instructors, Mad Science workshops offer preschool to seventh grade children truly engaging learning experiences.  All hour long programs includes all materials and pre-post notes for the teacher.

Following is a list of our workshop programs.

Grade K- 3

Ø      Bugs

Students will explore the world's most abundant animal! Insect defenses and their role in our ecosystems will be explored in fun, hands-on activities.

Ø      Dinosaurs

Examine real fossil casts, and explore the differences in the teeth of herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs. Students will participate in a mini dinosaur excavation.

Ø      Fundamental Forces

Gravity … inertia … centripetal force … who could ever imagine that an introduction to physics could be so much fun?  We'll experience these awesome forces for ourselves and build some cool devices to watch them at work!

Ø      Human Body

Children will learn about the human body: Our skeleton, organs and muscles. Emphasis will be on what role the heart plays in circulating blood in our body.

Ø      Mad Mixtures

Interactive and hands-on activities will assist students with this introduction to mixtures and the science of chemistry.

Ø      Matter of Fact

Explore molecules and how they are held together. See the dramatic differences between physical and chemical changes.

Ø      Seeking our Senses

Explore all five senses. Test your vision with optical illusions, experiment with your hearing, and try your hand at reading Braille.

Ø      Slippery Science

This class demystifies one of the most fascinating and beneficial molecules known to mankind…. Polymers.

Ø      Space Exploration

Learn what it takes to be a true globetrotter! These are the voyages of young, inquiring minds on a quest to discover Space! Their mission: to take an exciting look at planets, moons, comets, and the stars … to boldly go where bright young minds love to go. (Space suits not required.)

Ø      Super Structures

Discover the strengths of triangles, cylinders and arches. Learn how combinations of these shapes make for sturdy homes and skyscrapers!

Ø      Walloping Weather

Students conduct hands on experiments to understand how and why weather occurs and the seasons change. They try out meteorology measurement tools and act like weather reporters.

Grade 3-7

Ø      Photosynthesis

The workshop provides students with an introduction to photosynthesis, including an understanding of the chemical processes at work in the plant, plant respiration, and the role of plants in the food web. Study plant cells under the microscope.

Ø      Sound Basics

Discover sound and sound waves! A series of demonstrations and activities will illustrate the properties and transmission of sound through various mediums.

Ø      Laser Light

Learn about light, colours, holograms & special effects. Use a real laser to create illusions, design a light show and compete in a friendly game of Laser Limbo.

Ø      Current Events

Take a tour on the electron freeway! Conductors, insulators, transistors, and other elements in the world of circuit electricity introduce themselves to you via the tingle in your fingertips and the twinkle in your eye . .

Ø      Cells

Explore the cell anatomy and the function of the parts of the cell. Study actual cell structures under the microscope.

Ø      Mineral Mania

Recreate the process of rock formation and the process of rock and mineral classification. Experience the thrill of panning for gems: the gems you find you can take home for further study and identification.

Ø      Crazy Chemistry

Become a lab scientist in training and learn to manipulate an assortment of lab equipment in a series of hands-on experiments. Explore the difference between chemical and physical reactions and the molecular structure.

Ø      Ecosystem Exploration

Learn about the interconnections that exist between all the living things in ecosystems including human beings. The hands on activities encourage the students to interact with the concepts presented.

Special Interest

Ø      Be Tobacco Free

Learn about the harm inflicted on your body from smoke. Participate in experiments that look at healthy vs unhealthy lungs. Observe the effect of tobacco on teeth. Be Tobacco Free!

Ø      Black and Blue Oceans

Students will devise and test oil spill techniques in a minor oil spill. They will also explore the causes and remedies for acid rain through PH testing and monitoring methods.

Ø      Dirt on Garbage

Become a caretaker of the Earth and get a hands-on look at ways to help reduce our garbage, re-use what we cannot reduce and create ways to recycle! Hands on activities and interactive demonstrations will illustrate to children their role in improving the planet.

Ø      Science of Sport

Discover which part of your body Scientists believe can determine if you are going to be good in certain sports. Test your lung capacity and design a safety helmet. Learn about centre of gravity and balance, and make a squiggle ball to take home.
