NASA: Journey into Outer Space
In 25 years NASA is planning to have an established moon base and be going to Mars. That puts our elementary students at just the right age to lead this exciting phase of exploration. Let’s get a head start on Training! This hands-on camp designed with NASA sends children 5-12 on a quest for exploration.
Day 1: Earth and Beyond - Explore the farthest reaches of our solar system and create a lunar eclipse in this “mad” planetary tour! Learn how the planets stack up, and build and take home Kepler’s Cube™, a fun and educational 3-D solar system puzzle! Next, go on a mission to explore the atmosphere on Earth, and beyond! Travel to the end of the rainbow and make a sunset! Mix up various planetary atmospheres, one molecule at a time, discover how stars would look in space, and see what makes stars twinkle using your very own Shimmering Stars™!
Day 2: Astronaut-in-Training - Discover technology designed for outer space! Steer a laser beam through a laser maze, find hidden mountains using the principles of radar technology, and discover everyday objects that were originally designed for use in space! Bring the excitement home with a Lightning Launcher™ that lights up the sky! And that’s just the beginning! Live the life of an astronaut as you suit up for space flight! Find out how much you would weigh if you lived on Neptune, and how old you would be if you lived on Saturn. Participate in a space mission and make your very own Cosmic Chronometer™ watch to measure the time here on Earth!
Day 3: Solar Launch - This stellar program is your ticket to the stars! Watch star dust burn, and journey through a soapy galaxy as you investigate the life cycle of stars! Use your Bead Dipper™ to create a 3-dimensional glow-in-the-dark constellation! Then, it’s your chance to become a rocket scientist! Investigate the four forces of flight, and explore the science involved in rocket construction as you build your own Skyblazer II Rocket™ that you can take home!
Day 4: Eye on the Sky - Probe the mysteries of meteors and bounce around satellite light in this phenomenal program on space phenomena! Learn how to tell the difference between stars, planets and satellites in the night sky. See comets up close as one is formed before your eyes, and take home your very own Catch-a-Comet™!
Day 5: Space Voyage - Learn what it takes to be a true globetrotter! Race a balloon rocket and design your own car engine as you learn about thrust. See the principles of propulsion at work in a real rocket launch, and build your very own Shuttle Copter™ to fly to the skies!
Mad Machines & Engineering Mania
Days 1 & 2 - Machine Mania - Investigate the world of simple machines as you learn that machines are helpful for work AND play! Assemble and control pulleys, levers, catapults and micro-pinchers! Use the machines you create to feed yourself and launch ping-pong balls! Operating your simple machines will make work seem like play.
Days 3 & 4 - Jr. Engineers - Structures are all around you, everywhere you look and everywhere you go! Join a team of scientists to inspect the elements of structures as you build, test, and yes, even eat some structures you create. Climb inside a geodesic dome that you construct with fellow campers. Build a Soma cube puzzle that may even stump your parents!
Day 5 – Building Basics – In order to build you need to understand what to build “with” and find out how much the science of “chemistry” is part of our everyday life. Uncover the principles water of absorption and plaster by making sidewalk chalk to take home. Discover how atoms combine to form molecular structures as you grow crystals and explore chemical reactions in matter including making a chocolate candy roll.
Sciencepalooza!
Days 1 & 2 - Birds & The Beasts – Discover the unique characteristics of birds: investigate feathers to see how birds fly, compare birds’ beaks and feet and how this helps them to feed and adapt to their surroundings, dissect owl pellets to find out what they eat. Make your own bird feeder to attract your favorite species of birds to your own yard. Investigate insects and how they live.
Day 3 – Crazy Chemical Basics - Experiment with some chemistry concepts to better understand matter. Understand color and chromatography with fizzers and making colorful camp T-shirts. Discover the power of CLEAN and create a chemical reaction by making exothermic ice cream! YUM!
Days 4 & 5 - Shutterbugs! - Explore the use of light to utilize more than one form of photography. Make a cool kaleidoscope. Apply your skills to see inverted images that will help you to understand how a camera works. Get artistic with a diazzo paper and create a print to take home.
CSI – Detective Science
Day 1- Chemical Counting – This day and the next in the Mad Science Crime Laboratory will help junior investigators by building a basic understanding of detective chemical science. Learn how chemical elements help you to create chemical compounds. Play element bingo and make your own tasty molecule models and then eat them! Learn with hands-on reactions that matter is never created or destroyed and find out how fruits can be used to tell time?
Day 2 & 3 - Radical Reactions - Ready, set, reactions! See if water, soap or ketchup will work as a battery. Experiment with electrochemical reactions, as you use them to create a masterpiece. Discover the strength of electricity and how it can break apart molecules. Make a rainbow in a test tube and make your own invisible ink!
Day 4 & 5 - Scene of the Crime - Team up with fellow campers to solve the “Great Ice Cream Caper” crime. Arrive at camp to find a real crime scene surrounded by crime scene tape. Walk the grid and collect evidence to solve the crime. All of your observation skills will be needed as you use your new magnifying glasses and notebooks to record your evidence. Use your forensic skills to solve the crime and make your own ice cream snack.
Grossology - The science of the human body
Days 1 & 2 - Cell City - Take a fantastic trip into cell city. Learn about cells and the different parts within them. You will compare the parts of a cell to a real city as you investigate its different functions. Build your own take home model cell out of unique materials. Even your snack will be a fun cell model you can eat!
Days 3 & 4 - The Organ Trail - Do you know the recipe for a healthy body? You will after you journey down the Mad Science Organ Trail. Come to camp and meet "Tall Paul"! our Human Torso – His organs can be removed and replaced. Gross! Paul’s brains, bones, lungs, heart, and digestion systems will all be investigated felt and touched. Make a gutsy apron and a model lung to take home.
Day 5 – Body Chemistry – Now it gets really GROSS! We will investigate a variety of gross chemical reactions that relate to our bodies. Explore body electrochemistry, why we have spit, and explore the science of mucus, create a burping solution explain the science of farts and make drinkable blood. Experience the chemistry of Clean by making soap and then put your new chemistry know-how to work as you make your own GROSS brain goo“!
Crazy Chemworks
Delve into the world of atoms, molecules, and chemical reactions. From the super tiny to the super slimey, this fun, hands-on and interactive program sends them on a fascinating journey of exploration and discovery!
Day 1: Become a Junior Mad Scientist - Use your hands as a real Mad Scientist in this whirlwind class on how a lab works! Learn to manipulate laboratory equipment at your personal lab bench, and take home your very own Graduated Gear to continue your research! Create a tiny world of atoms with your very own set of Atomic Coins! Learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results!
Day 2: pHreezing pHoaming pHun! - Slide down the colorful pH scale and dip into the world of acids and bases! Explore the pH extremes with your Reaction Tube in what is sure to be a popping experience! Discover whether liquids found in your home are acids or bases using your personal pH Paper! Manipulate matter in all of its three states! Melt metal in boiling water and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice! Use your Cup to test the temperature of liquid matter in your home!
Day 3: Super Slimey, Ooey Gooey Creations - Ooze into a gooey time of sliming around! Create slime using the Mad Science recipe, and then enter the Slime Olympics! Take home your own concoction of Mad Science Slime! Stick stuff to the walls, and push the power of tape to the limits in this adhesive lesson on things that cling! Build a bond with glue and get attached to Professor Beakerdude!
Day 4: Flash & Glow Chemistry - Hop on board the chemistry express for a high-speed science experience! Perform instantaneous experiments in this fast-paced class on split-second reactions that go like mad! Pick up an Action Flask and have a blast! Discover amazing things that glow bright in the dark and come to light! Probe the properties of light and explore some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology! Use your Blacklight Writer to make secret messages that only you can see!
Day 5: Solve a Che-mystery and Let’s Party Science Style! - In this final wrap up day you will put your new found chemical knowledge to the test with a Che-mystery as you grow a crazy crystal garden and make your own “chemical” soda pop!. We will ccelebrate our accomplishments and gained knowledge with a high-energy, interactive science party!
Red Hot Robots
Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots! Learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with different types including sound sensing robots, line-tracking robots, amphibious robots and robots that can even play soccer! Discover the science of circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. Use your skills to build your very own working robot to take home with you! (for ages: entering 2nd grade to entering 7th grade)
Day 1: Ready for Robots - Children will explore the fundamentals of robotics and discover how robots are used through activities and games. They will begin to build their very own “Rockit Robot” that they will take home at the end of the week.
Day 2: Circuit Science - This program will explore the “nuts and bolts” of robots as children will build simple circuits, test for conductors and non-conductors and discover how switches work. Children will make their own “Bugbots” to take home.
Day 3: Use Your Common Sensors! - Children will explore the concept of sensors and discover what they enable a robot to learn about its environment. They will play games that involve their senses and do activities that involve communication. Children will make their own “Circuit Sensor” to take home.
Day 4: Robots 101 - Campers will learn about Asimov’s “Laws of Robotics” and applications of robotic technology in this fun-filled program. They will continue building their Rockit Robot and make their own “Puppet Robot” to take home.
Day 5: Advanced Robotics - Children will complete the building of their Rockit Robot and spend time using their imaginations to create robot designs of their own. They will experiment with special robots that play soccer and discover how to program robots via a sequence of commands. Each child will take home their Rockit Robot to continue their exploration of robotics at home.
Earth Awareness
Days 1 and 2 - Earth Awareness - Learn all about pollution and what it does to our planet. Determine what big problems a little pollution can cause with a lake in a bottle. Unearth pollution solutions and other ways to help our planet. Bake nachos with solar power and make your own recycled paper.
Days 3 and 4 - Nature - Let your nose be your guide on a trail of scents. Follow the clues on this aromatic path. Experiment with natural dyes that you can find in fruits and veggies. Decorate your own painters cap with all the colors that nature has to offer. Use jaws and claws to feed your beastly stomach.
Day 5 - Going Green - Discover how recycling can help our planet and what ecosystems are all about and how we can help preserve them. We will make mini ecosystems to take home and reduce greenhouse gases and see the world through a whole new light using our new diffraction glasses.
Spies, Space & Sport
Days 1 & 2 Mad Messages - Learn how to be secret spy as we decipher the world around and learn different ways to send mad messages. Use Morse code to send secret transmissions to your friends and to interpret secret messages from them. Discover the mystery of the Mad Science Message Wheel. Experiment with cool color-changing goldenrod paper.
Days 3 & 4 Science of Sport - Jump right into the science behind sports. Test what your toes have to do with tennis and what your feet have to do with football. Discover how to find your center-of-gravity and use it to your advantage in sports and uncover how hot and cold packs work. See how much air your lungs can hold. Test balance and strength and see how much they have to do with success in sport. Make and test helmets for safety with your own crash test egg.
Day 5 Space Day - Blast off with science as you launch differnt rockets. Test soil for "Martian" life. Experiment with space suit design. Eat like the astronauts when you make your own space snac, and taste real astronaut ice cream. Learn how to throw water around and stay dry at the same time. Build your own rubber band powered rocket to take home.
