NASA: Journey into Outer Space
In 25 years NASA is planning to have an established moon base and be going to Mars. That puts our elementary students at just the right age to lead this exciting phase of exploration. Let’s get a head start on Training! From our Earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on camp designed with NASA sends children 5-12 on a quest for exploration. All atmosphere and space phenomena will be investigated, as well the forces of flight, living in space and the challenges of space travel. Participate in a rocket launch, and build lots of cool take homes
Day 1: Earth and Beyond - Explore the farthest reaches of our solar system and create a lunar eclipse in this “mad” planetary tour! Learn how the planets stack up, and build and take home Kepler’s Cube™, a fun and educational 3-D solar system puzzle! Next, go on a mission to explore the atmosphere on Earth, and beyond! Travel to the end of the rainbow and make a sunset! Mix up various planetary atmospheres, one molecule at a time, discover how stars would look in space, and see what makes stars twinkle using your very own Shimmering Stars™!
Day 2: Astronaut-in-Training - Discover technology designed for outer space! Steer a laser beam through a laser maze, find hidden mountains using the principles of radar technology, and discover everyday objects that were originally designed for use in space! Bring the excitement home with a Lightning Launcher™ that lights up the sky! And that’s just the beginning! Live the life of an astronaut as you suit up for space flight! Find out how much you would weigh if you lived on Neptune, and how old you would be if you lived on Saturn. Participate in a space mission and make your very own Cosmic Chronometer™ watch to measure the time here on Earth!
Day 3: Solar Launch - This stellar program is your ticket to the stars! Watch star dust burn, and journey through a soapy galaxy as you investigate the life cycle of stars! Use your Bead Dipper™ to create a 3-dimensional glow-in-the-dark constellation! Then, it’s your chance to become a rocket scientist! Investigate the four forces of flight, and explore the science involved in rocket construction as you build your own Skyblazer II Rocket™ that you can take home!
Day 4: Eye on the Sky - Probe the mysteries of meteors and bounce around satellite light in this phenomenal program on space phenomena! Learn how to tell the difference between stars, planets and satellites in the night sky. See comets up close as one is formed before your eyes, and take home your very own Catch-a-Comet™!
Day 5: Space Voyage - Learn what it takes to be a true globetrotter! Race a balloon rocket and design your own car engine as you learn about thrust. See the principles of propulsion at work in a real rocket launch, and build your very own Shuttle Copter™ to fly to the skies!
Mad Machines & Engineering Mania
Days 1 & 2 - Machine Mania - Investigate the world of simple machines as you learn that machines are helpful for work AND play! Assemble and control pulleys, levers, catapults and micro-pinchers! Use the machines you create to feed yourself and launch ping-pong balls! Operating your simple machines will make work seem like play.
Days 3 & 4 - Jr. Engineers - Structures are all around you, everywhere you look and everywhere you go! Join a team of scientists to inspect the elements of structures as you build, test, and yes, even eat some structures you create. Climb inside a geodesic dome that you construct with fellow campers. Build a Soma cube puzzle that may even stump your parents!
Day 5 – Building Basics – In order to build you need to understand what to build “with” and find out how much the science of “chemistry” is part of our everyday life. Uncover the principles water of absorption and plaster by making sidewalk chalk to take home. Discover how atoms combine to form molecular structures as you grow crystals and explore chemical reactions in matter including making a chocolate candy roll.
Predators & Prey
Days 1 & 2 - Shutterbugs! - Explore the use of light to utilize more than one form of photography. Make a cool kaleidoscope. Apply your skills to make a camera obscura that will help you to understand how a camera works. Get artistic with a diazzo paper and create a print to take home.
Day 3 – Crazy Chemical Basics - Experiment with some chemistry concepts explored in Shutterbugs to better understand matter. Understand color and chromatography with fizzers and making colorful camp T-shirts. Discover the power of CLEAN and create a chemical reaction by making exothermic ice cream! YUM!
Days 4 & 5 - Birds & The Beasts – With photography and chemistry under your belt, you are ready to study biology and become an ornithologist. Discover the unique characteristics of birds: investigate feathers to see how birds fly, compare birds’ beaks and feet and how this helps them to feed and adapt to their surroundings, dissect owl pellets to find out what they eat. Make your own bird feeder to attract your favorite species of birds to your own yard.
CSI – Detective Science
Day 1- Chemical Counting – This day and the next in the Mad Science Crime Laboratory will help junior investigators by building a basic understanding of detective chemical science. Learn how chemical elements help you to create chemical compounds. Play element bingo and make your own tasty molecule models and then eat them! Learn with hands-on reactions that matter is never created or destroyed and find out how fruits can be used to tell time?
Day 2 & 3 - Radical Reactions - Ready, set, reactions! See if water, soap or ketchup will work as a battery. Experiment with electrochemical reactions, as you use them to create a masterpiece. Discover the strength of electricity and how it can break apart molecules. Make a rainbow in a test tube and make your own invisible ink!
Day 4 & 5 - Scene of the Crime - Team up with fellow campers to solve the “Great Ice Cream Caper” crime. Arrive at camp to find a real crime scene surrounded by crime scene tape. Walk the grid and collect evidence to solve the crime. All of your observation skills will be needed as you use your new magnifying glasses and notebooks to record your evidence. Use your forensic skills to solve the crime and make your own ice cream snack.
Body Works
Days 1 & 2 - Cell City - Take a fantastic trip into cell city. Learn about cells and the different parts within them. You will compare the parts of a cell to a real city as you investigate its different functions. Build your own take home model cell out of unique materials. Even your snack will be a fun cell model you can eat!
Days 3 & 4 - The Organ Trail - Do you know the recipe for a healthy body? You will after you journey down the Mad Science Organ Trail. Come to camp and meet "Tall Paul"! Paul is a torso model that can have his organs removed and replaced. Paul’s brains, bones, lungs, heart, and digestion systems will all be investigated. Make a gutsy apron and a model lung to take home.
Day 5 – Body Chemistry (Old Chemical Counting 1st half) – Put your brain into action by investigating a variety of chemical reactions that relate to our bodies. You will work some chemical magic, and then explore electrochemistry with a lemon shocker and by electroplating a nickel! Experience the chemistry of Clean and then put your new chemistry know-how to work as you make your own brain goo“!
